3. Apply and Provide Documents

If you’re eligible, fill out our application form and upload the required documents (e.g., certified ID, transcripts). You can still submit your application before you have all documents ready, as some might take time to obtain.

As part of the placement process, we send your CV out to schools so please ensure your CV is up-to-date, and preferably tailor make it so it has a teacher trainee perspective. See below on tips to create a Teacher trainee CV.

*Police Vetting: Can take up to four weeks, so apply early to avoid delays.

5. Interview and Assessment

1. TTI in-person interview: All trainees must complete an in-person TTI interview with our Teaching team. We strongly recommend you complete a school visit and attend an information session before attending the interview. Please refer to #1 First Steps for info on how to arrange a school visit and information session dates.

2. Literacy & Numeracy Test: The Literacy and Numeracy tests are a core requirement of the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand for all applicants to our teaching programmes. These involve a short literacy and numeracy assessment that is completed at our Parnell Campus.

We will be running regular numeracy tutorials to help you prepare for the Numeracy Assessment. Dates of the upcoming tutorials will be sent to you after we've received your application.

3. Partner school interviews:

Partner School Referral: If a partner school referred you, they’ll arrange your interview.
No Referral: We’ll help find a “home” school that suits you, and they’ll schedule your interview.

*The assessments, tutorials and interviews will be held regularly, you will receive booking links after you've submitted your application.

Information Session

Before going to a TTI in-person interview, we strongly advise you to attend one of our information sessions. It will provide you insight into our Primary and Secondary School-based Postgraduate Diploma Teaching Programmes.

School Visits

We recommend that you arrange a school visit when applying to study at The Teachers’ Institute, this is particularly important if you completed your schooling overseas. A school visit will help you gain a better understanding of New Zealand’s school culture and can be very beneficial in confirming your interest in, and commitment to, becoming a teacher. It also provides an opportunity to become more familiar with classroom environments and the role of the teacher.
