Literacy and Numeracy assessments

To meet the requirements of the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand you will need to complete two assessments in literacy and numeracy.

Literacy:

All applicants must take the literacy test (60 minutes) which will involve reading an article and answering some multiple-choice questions about the article, and a writing task.

Sample tests are available and will be sent to you after we’ve received your application.

The pass mark for the literacy test is 80%.

Numeracy:

Depending on which programme you are applying for, there are two different numeracy tests:

Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching - Secondary, school based

The numeracy test (60 minutes) will involve basic mathematical concepts, such as addition, subtraction, finding equivalent fractions, multiplying decimals, understanding place value, and converting common fractions, decimals and percentages.

The pass mark for this numeracy test is 80%. Sample tests are available and will be sent to you after we’ve received your application.

Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching - Primary, school based

All applicants must take an adult numeracy test developed by the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC).

The numeracy assessment is computer-adaptive, meaning the difficulty of questions adjusts based on your responses. If you answer correctly, you will receive progressively harder questions. If you answer incorrectly, the assessment provides easier questions to better identify your current numeracy level.

Take your time on the first 10-12 questions, as these set the difficulty level. The required level for this test is Stage 6.

At the time of the assessment:

·       Calculators are permitted for certain questions, but not all.

·       Pen and paper are recommended for notetaking and calculations.

·       If you do not meet the required level, you can sign up for our numeracy tutorials and will have the opportunity to resit the assessment.

Key Content in the Primary Numeracy Assessment:

Number:

•    Basic facts (e.g., addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)

•    Addition, subtraction, and multiplication to at least 3-digit numbers, including integers and decimals

•    Types of numbers (e.g., factors, multiples, odd/even, exponents, including powers of 10, integers)

•    Place value of decimals, including multiplying and dividing by 10, 100, 1000, and their multiples

•    Order of operations

•    Rounding to decimal places and significant figures, and rounding whole numbers to the nearest 10, 100, 1000

•    Naming and ordering fractions

•    Equivalent fractions (e.g., completing a conversion table)

•    Fractions – addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division

•    Converting between improper and mixed fractions

•    Converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages

•    Finding a percentage of an amount

•    Solving reverse percentage problems (e.g., If 60% of a total is 90, what is the total?)

•    Ratio

•    Understanding and solving proportional reasoning problems (e.g., if I need 6 eggs to bake 10 cakes, how many eggs will I need to make 15 cakes?)

Measurement:

•    Converting between metric units of length, area, and volume

•    Appropriate units and metric conversions: length, area, capacity (liquids), mass (weight)

•    Finding perimeter, circumference, area of 2-dimensional shapes (circle, square, rectangle, triangle, parallelogram, regular and irregular polygon, and composite shapes)

•    Finding the volume and surface area of 3-dimensional shapes

(e.g., cuboid, prism)

•    Performing calculations involving time
