Subject Lead


Location: Auckland 

Terms: Part-time, contract

Remuneration: By negotiation 

Reporting to: Academic Director

Requirements:

  • Fully certificated teacher status in New Zealand

  • Post-graduate qualification an advantage

  • Subject Leads will be required to hold a current practising certificate as a teacher in Aotearoa New Zealand. 

 

About the Role

The Subject Leads serve as key knowledge experts and mentors, specialising in a specific secondary school teaching subject area. This specialist plays a critical role in the professional development of students by providing expertise in curriculum content, pedagogical strategies, and subject-specific methodologies. They guide trainees in lesson planning, instructional delivery, and assessment practices tailored to the unique demands of their subject area. The subject specialist supports students to develop a deep understanding of the subject matter, promoting critical thinking skills, and encouraging a passion for the subject in the trainees. Through collaborative mentorship and a focus on subject-specific teaching nuances, the subject specialist helps students to cultivate the knowledge and skills.

 

Subject Leads may be employed within a school. It is expected that Subject Leads can continue in their current role and undertake their TTI responsibilities in addition to this. They will be required to undertake induction and ongoing development with the Trust. 

 

It is expected that there will be 14 two-hour workshop sessions across the year that will run from 3pm - 5pm as well as four full-day sessions (TTI will cover relief costs for the four full-day sessions and for one period on the other 14 workshop days if required).

About the Trust

We are an independent charitable Trust which works with secondary schools to ensure they are able to provide their students with the best possible teaching and learning. The Trust primarily does this through providing in-school teacher education for new teachers, as well as supporting schools to offer outstanding mentoring and ongoing support for their new teachers.

Primary Teaching Fellow

Position Title: Primary Teaching Fellow

Reporting To: Primary Programme Director

Location: 3 Margot Street, Epsom, Auckland

Position Purpose

The Primary Teaching Fellow is responsible for the effective delivery of initial teacher education, with a core focus on teaching, mentoring, and supporting trainee teachers as they develop the knowledge, skills, and professional identity required for primary teaching. This role provides academic and pastoral guidance to students, facilitates learning through culturally responsive and research-informed teaching practices, and supports their progression through both coursework and practicum. Working closely with partner schools and mentor teachers, the Teaching Fellow plays a key role in preparing trainees for the realities of the classroom. In addition to teaching and supervision, the role includes responsibilities in programme delivery, assessment, and quality assurance. The Teaching Fellow contributes to The Teachers’ Institute (TTI) strategic goals, community engagement, and the development of a strong, inclusive learning environment underpinned by a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and ongoing professional learning.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities

Programme Delivery and Development

● Deliver effective, evidence-based teaching aligned with the programme curriculum.​

● Contribute to the design, development, and review of programme content to reflect best practices in education and cultural responsiveness.​

● Collaborate with the academic team to ensure the curriculum is responsive to student and sector needs. Trainee Support and Assessment.​

● Observe, mentor, and support trainee teachers in academic, home-school and practicum settings.​

● Provide high-quality, timely feedback and facilitate reflective learning practices.​

● Conduct marking and internal/external moderation of assessments in accordance with academic policies.

● Support learners with diverse needs, using inclusive and equitable approaches.

Mentor Support and Training

● Engage with school-based mentor teachers to provide support, training, and professional guidance.​

● Foster a positive and collaborative triadic relationship between mentor, trainee, and TTI.​

 

Stakeholder and School Relationships​

● Maintain strong professional relationships with partner schools, kura, and education sector stakeholders.​

● Support practicum coordination and serve as a liaison for host schools. Regulatory Compliance and Quality Assurance.​

● Ensure all programme activities comply with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand, NZQA, and other relevant regulatory and legislative requirements.​

● Contribute to quality assurance processes including audits, evaluation, and academic review cycles.​

● Maintain accurate records to support compliance and reporting obligations.​

 

Strategic Planning and Implementation​

● Contribute to the development and implementation of the TTI’s strategic plan, ensuring alignment with organisational goals and educational priorities.​

● Participate in internal planning processes to align academic delivery with strategic outcomes.

Community Engagement and Student Recruitment​

● Represent TTI at education events and outreach activities to build community awareness and support student recruitment efforts.​

● Actively engage with community organisations, iwi, hapū, and stakeholders to support education pathways and promote accessibility.

 

Research and Professional Development

● Support and engage in the research agenda of the institution, including empirical research and the communication of research findings.

● Demonstrate commitment to ongoing professional learning, reflective practice, and maintaining knowledge of current education trends.

 

Data Analysis and Reporting

● Use data to inform teaching practice, identify trends in student achievement, and support decision-making.

● Contribute to institutional reporting, self-assessment, and programme evaluation.
