Secondary Teaching Fellow
Position Title: Secondary Teaching Fellow
Reporting To: Secondary Programme Director/Academic Director
Location: 3 Margot Street, Epsom, Auckland

Position Purpose
The Secondary Teaching Fellow is responsible for the effective delivery of initial teacher education, with a core focus on teaching, mentoring, and supporting trainee teachers as they develop the knowledge, skills, and professional identity required for secondary teaching. This role provides academic and pastoral guidance to students, facilitates learning through culturally responsive and research-informed teaching practices, and supports their progression through both coursework and practicum. Working closely with partner schools and mentor teachers, the Teaching Fellow plays a key role in preparing trainees for the realities of the classroom. In addition to teaching and supervision, the role includes responsibilities in programme delivery, assessment, and quality assurance. The Teaching Fellow contributes to The Teachers’ Institute (TTI) strategic goals, community engagement, and the development of a strong, inclusive learning environment underpinned by a commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and ongoing professional learning.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
Programme Delivery and Development
● Deliver effective, evidence-based teaching aligned with the programme curriculum.
● Contribute to the design, development, and review of programme content to reflect best practices in education and cultural responsiveness.
● Collaborate with the academic team to ensure the curriculum is responsive to student and sector needs. Trainee Support and Assessment
● Observe, mentor, and support trainee teachers in academic, home-school and practicum settings.
● Provide high-quality, timely feedback and facilitate reflective learning practices.
● Conduct marking and internal/external moderation of assessments in accordance with academic policies.
● Support learners with diverse needs, using inclusive and equitable approaches.
Mentor Support and Training
● Engage with school-based mentor teachers to provide support, training, and professional guidance.
● Foster a positive and collaborative triadic relationship between mentor, trainee, and TTI.
Stakeholder and School Relationships
● Maintain strong professional relationships with partner schools, kura, and education sector stakeholders.
● Support practicum coordination and serve as a liaison for host schools. Regulatory Compliance and Quality Assurance
● Ensure all programme activities comply with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand, NZQA, and other relevant regulatory and legislative requirements.
● Contribute to quality assurance processes including audits, evaluation, and academic review cycles.
● Maintain accurate records to support compliance and reporting obligations.
Strategic Planning and Implementation
● Contribute to the development and implementation of the TTI’s strategic plan, ensuring alignment with organisational goals and educational priorities.
● Participate in internal planning processes to align academic delivery with strategic outcomes.
Community Engagement and Student Recruitment
● Represent TTI at education events and outreach activities to build community awareness and support student recruitment efforts.
● Actively engage with community organisations, iwi, hapū, and stakeholders to support education pathways and promote accessibility
Research and Professional Development
● Support and engage in the research agenda of the institution, including empirical research and the communication of research findings.
● Demonstrate commitment to ongoing professional learning, reflective practice, and maintaining knowledge of current education trends.
Data Analysis and Reporting
● Use data to inform teaching practice, identify trends in student achievement, and support decision-making.
● Contribute to institutional reporting, self-assessment, and programme evaluation.

Person Specification
Qualifications and Experience
● Recognised teaching qualification and current New Zealand Teaching Council Practising Certificate.
● Must hold a Master’s qualification or be willing to work towards one.
● Experience in secondary teaching in Aotearoa New Zealand.
● Experience with adult learners or teacher education is desirable.
● Familiarity with compliance and quality assurance frameworks within tertiary or teacher education preferred.
Skills and Competencies
● Knowledge of the New Zealand Curriculum and effective teaching pedagogies.
● Knowledge of educational research.
● Strong mentoring and interpersonal skills.
● Confidence in data use and reporting for educational improvement.
● Commitment to culturally responsive practice and inclusive education.
