Celebrating Our Inaugural Cohort
Celebrating Our Inaugural Cohort Celebrating Our Inaugural Cohort January 13, 2025 The Teachers’ Institute (TTI) is excited to announce the commencement of our first cohort of teacher trainees this week. These trainees have all received a fully funded place on our programme which includes a $12,500 stipend to assist with living and study-related expenses. Our newly launched Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary, School-based) represents a significant milestone in addressing the critical teacher supply issues in New Zealand, especially in subject areas such as Science, Technology, Social Science, Maths, English, and Te Reo Māori. We are delighted to welcome 48 dedicated teacher trainees as part of our inaugural 2025 cohort. These trainees will be based at 14 schools around Auckland. Notably, over 50% of our cohort comprises career changers from diverse industry backgrounds, including law, education, marketing, finance, engineering, and IT. Additionally, over half of the cohort have completed postgraduate-level study, with more than 30% holding a master’s or PhD degree. David Ferguson, The Teachers’ Institute’s CEO said: “We are very proud of this cohort of diverse and talented student-teachers who are joining us in our mission to train the best teachers possible for our schools. We are looking forward to
NZQA and Teaching Council Approval of TTI’s Innovative Postgraduate Secondary Teaching Programme
NZQA and Teaching Council Approval NZQA and Teaching Council Approval of TTI’s Innovative Postgraduate Secondary Teaching Programme Nov 1, 2024 The Teachers’ Institute (TTI) has announced that its Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary, School-based) has received approval from the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) and the Teaching Council. Industry representatives on the approval panel were impressed by the programme’s research-based approach and its potential to effectively prepare teacher trainees for their first year as provisionally certified teachers. Furthermore, TTI has obtained approval from the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC), allowing teacher trainees to apply for student loans through StudyLink. David Ferguson, the incoming CEO of TTI and departing Headmaster of Westlake Boys’ High School, expressed his gratitude: “We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone involved in this process, from the programme development team to the TTI staff, our community of schools, and industry stakeholders who contributed to the consultation. Your hard work, expertise and commitment, have been invaluable in bringing this programme to life.” The Teachers’ Institute’s Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary, School-based) is a one-year, full-time programme leading to New Zealand teacher registration. The programme is unique as it places trainees in a home school for the entire year, where
The Teachers’ Institute announces new CEO
The Teachers’ Institute new CEO The Teachers’ Institute announces new CEO September 13, 2024 Today The Teachers’ Institute announced the appointment of David Ferguson, Headmaster of Westlake Boys High School in Auckland, as its new Chief Executive. David will step down from his current role as Principal at the end of the 2024 academic year to lead TTI as it launches its new school-based initial teacher education programme from January 2025, in partnership with secondary schools across Auckland. David said: “I’m really looking forward to this new challenge, which is about ensuring that every school is able to fill teaching positions with well-prepared teachers, and ultimately offering every New Zealand young person outstanding educational opportunities.” The Teachers’ Institute was launched with the support of a community of secondary schools across Auckland in response to ongoing teacher supply issues, especially in subject areas such as Science, Technology, Maths, English, and Te Reo Māori. The Trust aims to offer a unique, in-school pathway for new graduates and mature students to train to teach whilst based in a ‘home’ school for a year. The programme has been specially designed drawing on international research to support students to develop their teaching practice in a
The Teachers’ Institute Secures Ministry of Education Funding for 2025
Funding Secured The Teachers’ Institute Secures Ministry of Education Funding for 2025 September 3, 2024 The Teachers’ Institute (TTI) today announced that it has been approved for Ministry of Education funding as part of the government’s School Onsite Training Programme (SOTP) for Initial Teacher Education (ITE) programmes. This funding will provide up to 50 aspiring teachers with fees-free study for their Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (secondary, school-based) through TTI as well as a $12,500 stipend to help with living and study-related expenses. The government has recently expanded the SOTP to increase the number of funded places available for teacher trainees over the next four years, starting in 2025. This expansion acknowledges the significant benefits of the SOTP, where students gain extended practical classroom experience, preparing them well for a successful career in teaching. The SOTP funded places support teacher trainees to be onsite at one of TTI’s community of schools from day one, allowing them to observe and learn important aspects of teacher training that can only be experienced through hands-on training. This increased practical experience ensures that new teachers feel confident and prepared when they start their first year as provisionally certificated teachers. David Ferguson, Trust Chair of The
Auckland secondary schools create new pathway into teaching
Press Release Auckland secondary schools create new pathway into teaching May 9, 2024 Download our Launch Press Release A group of Auckland secondary schools are working together to create a new pathway into teaching to complement existing initial teacher education (ITE) programmes. Known as The Teachers’ Institute, the Trust is a collaboration between eleven founding secondary schools: Westlake Boys High School, Auckland Grammar School, Rangitoto College, St Cuthbert’s College, Diocesan School for Girls, St Peters College, Baradene College, Mount Albert Grammar School, Westlake Girls High School, Macleans College, and Liston College. The Trust is developing a school-based ITE programme to attract new teachers into the profession and is expecting to start accepting applications from mid-2024 to start in January 2025. Teacher trainees will complete their teaching qualification whilst based day-to-day in one of the member schools and enrolled with the Trust, which is registered as a tertiary organisation. Trust Chair and Headmaster of Westlake Boys High School, David Ferguson, says school-based teacher education has proved effective in attracting more people into the profession and delivering high-quality training for new teachers overseas, and has the potential to address a need that also exists in Aotearoa, New Zealand. “Our goal is a
